Nepal is facing an unprecedented crisis
in its modern history. The 'people's war' started by Communist
Party of Nepal-Maoists (CPN-M) since 1996 has not only taken the
lives of more than ten thousand people and damaged property worth
billions of rupees but has also challenged centuries old authoritarian
regime. The circumstances in the current Nepalese polity are pushing
us towards a 'failed-state syndrome.'
Several countries have undergone a phase
of violence and armed conflict in their history. There are many
similarities in these conflicts in terms of objectives, nature
of rebellion and issues covered while starting or negotiating
conflict or post conflict transformation. Experiences of countries
like Philippines, Guatemala, Columbia, Nicaragua, Peru, Northern
Ireland, Angola and South Africa, etc. are useful source of knowledge
for Nepal. In recent years, knowledge, skills and ability to resolve
conflicts around the world have increased. Innovative ways have
been used in different conflict ridden countries with the help
of global knowledge centres and practitioner organisations.
Media plays a vita role in fueling
or settling conflict, considering this fact, FFP has carried out
researches in media's role in conflict and a regular media monitoing
system. It has been keeping newspaper clippings on political events,
attacks and issues related to conflict transformation and peace
building.
FFP has carried out researches
at district level to document peace initiative at local level
to provide a first hand experience of conflict, people's perception
and local peace initiatives carried out by the stakeholders at
the local level. It has also assessed the infrastructure damage
and the effect of conflict in economic, cultral, education and
social sectors of the particular districts.
The first of the series covering Dolakha and
Rammechhap has been published. Rest of the researches covering
other districts will be published in near future.
