During his 24 years of professional work Bishnu Raj Upreti has been involved in organisational and personnel management, budget management, strategic planning, projects design, implementation, monitoring and evaluation, biodiversity assessment and conservation, natural resource management, agricultural extension, community/rural development, institutional analysis and strengthening, gender mainstreaming, conflict analysis and management, poverty assessment and income generation, social policy analysis, renewable energy issues, academic and action research, surveys and baseline preparation, training and human resource development, liaison and co-ordination, setting up of community users groups, steering committees, production of reports, briefing papers and resources materials, organisation and facilitation of seminars, workshops, training and meetings at various levels with communities, international and national non governmental organisations, government organisations, donors and private sectors. 1. April 2004 onward: Consultant of International Alert and Director of Friends for Peace.

Main responsibilities involve :
• Direct the Resource Centre and supervise staff and consultants

• Administer programme and budget

• Facilitate the sharing of expertise to inform the negotiations and wider peace process.

• Create greater space for dialogue between parties to the conflict on issues of contention, and informed debate and contributions by civil society, politicians, media and others on how to address issues.

• Increased capacity of Nepali researchers, and potentially facilitators, through the development of conflict and peacebuilding expertise, and exposure to different peace processes worldwide.

• Increased international attention on the conflict in Nepal and greater appropriate support for a sustainable peace process and political settlement, learning from past experiences.

• Physical space that houses a central public resource of books, journals, magazines and other relevant materials on conflict transformation.

• Consult with civil society leaders and others on the role of the centre, ideas for initial activities and focus issues, resulting in guiding principles, to which all related individuals would abide by.

• Hire researchers, administrator and other staff, with advice from the core group, though application and interview processes.

• Establish a physical space for the resource centre and equip the centre with a library of materials on conflict transformation, peacebuilding, negotiation, mediation, facilitation, peace processes, media and conflict and others as appropriate.

Other skills

Communication: My work involved intensive communication and discussion with numerous individuals with varied cultural, academic, geographical backgrounds that gave me opportunities to develop my communication skills.

Team work : I always worked with large number of experiences and young professionals of different cultural, social and academic background. Such work environment was very useful for me to develop team work ability. I have organised several workshops, training, meetings and visit in a participatory manner involving several people.

Leadership : My professional career was started with the grassroot work and developed to national and international levels. One of the main reasons of this achievement was my leadership ability. The first Leadership award I won from the Dutch INGO, SNV while I work there, has exemplified this claim.
